About Mensa® and Space Coast Area Mensa

What is the purpose of Mensa?

There are three main purposes of Mensa:

  1. Identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
  2. Encourage research into the nature, characteristics, and uses of intelligence.
  3. Provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for members.

What qualifies me to be a Mensa member?

To qualify for Mensa, you must have scored in the top 2% of the general population on an accepted, standardized intelligence test.  Five million Americans are eligible for membership.

What type of people are members of American Mensa?

Mensans come from all walks of life. They range from 3 to over 100 years old. They represent both sexes, all races, various professions, and many beliefs. However, they share one trait: high intelligence.

What does Space Coast Area Mensa do?

In addition to our regular (and irregular) monthly activities, we host a "Regional Gathering" every other year.  2008 was one of our years!  Please see the Gatherings page for more details.  As well as a social opportunity, during the RG we have a silent auction to raise funds for a scholarship that is awarded to students to help them pursue their higher education goals.  For more information about the scholarship, please contact the Scholarship Chairman.

What Geographical Area Does SCAM Cover?

SCAM covers the space coast from Brevard County south through Indian River County.

How Can I Qualify for Membership in Mensa®?

There are several ways to establish your qualification for membership in Mensa.

Prior evidence

You may have a sufficiently high IQ score from one of over 200 tests you may have taken in the past. These could have been given by schools, colleges, the military, or private psychologists. To determine if you have a qualifying score from an accepted test, click on those words. If you do qualify on prior evidence, you can apply for membership by writing to American Mensa Ltd.

Private Testing

You may choose to be evaluated by a private psychologist. In this case, make sure that the test is one of the many that Mensa accepts and have the results sent directly to American Mensa Ltd. at the address listed here.

Local Mensa Testing

Space Coast Area Mensa makes provision for testing locally. For dates, see the Calendar, or contact the Proctor Coordinator, Hank Rhodes.

What are the requirements for taking the Mensa test?

The Mensa test is designed for people over 14 years of age, who have no disabilities that affect their abilities to take this test, and who are fluent in English. People between the ages of 14 and 18 must have a parent or guardian sign an agreement for testing. The fee for testing is $40.00. No calculators or other aids are permitted in the test, but thinking is encouraged! To sign up, contact the Proctor Coordinator. He can also give you information on nonverbal, un-timed tests if regular testing would be difficult for you.

What is it like to take the Mensa test?
